There are eighteen key Puranas, each dedicated to a major deity – Vishnu, Shiva or Devi – and together, they make a rich tapestry of creation, preservation and renewal. These aren’t just myths; they reflect the essence of Indian civilization, encapsulating philosophy, cosmology, music, art and moral values in narrative form. But why are they still significant today? Because the Puranas remind us that stories are vessels of wisdom, that even as times change, the themes of devotion, compassion and wonder remain our most enduring languages.
Among the manuscripts showcased here are the Bhagavata Purana, Vishnu Purana, Shiva Purana, Kurma Purana and the Gita Govinda Vyakhya, to name a few. The Bhagavata Purana honors the life of Krishna. The Vedangas: The Limbs of the Vedas

This showcase highlights manuscripts that beautifully capture the richness and diversity of Sanskrit literature, featuring works from the renowned poet Kalidasa, whose incredible command of language and deep emotional resonance have been celebrated for centuries. Among these treasures is Kumara Sambhava, an epic poem that tells the story of the divine love between Shiva and Pravati, along with the bbirth of their son, Kumara, the God of war. There’s also Megha Sandesha, a charming lyrical poem where a cloud serves as a messenger, carrying heartfelt words of love across the sky. ಪುರಾಣಗಳು: ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ಭಾರತದ ಶಾಶ್ವತ ಕಥೆಗಳು

ಪುರಾಣಗಳೆಂದರೆ ಒಟ್ಟು ಹದಿನೆಂಟು, ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಂದೂ ಕೂಡ ವಿಷ್ಣು, ಶಿವ ಅಥವಾ ದೇವಿಗೆ ಸಮರ್ಪಿತವಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಒಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಸೃಷ್ಟಿ, ಸ್ಥಿತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಲಯದ ಅದ್ಭುತ ಚಿತ್ರಪಟವನ್ನು ಸೇರ್ಪಡಿಸುತ್ತವೆ. ಇವು ಕೇವಲ ಪೌರಾಣಿಕ ಕಥೆಗಳಲ್ಲ; ಇವು ಭಾರತದ ತತ್ತ್ವಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ, ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಾಂಡಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ, ಸಂಗೀತ, ಕಲೆ ಮತ್ತು ನೈತಿಕ ಮೌಲ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಕಥಾರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಳಗೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತವೆ. ಆದರೆ ಇವುಗಳು ಇಂದಿಗೂ ಏಕೆ ಪ್ರಾಮುಖ್ಯವಾಗಿವೆ? ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ಪುರಾಣಗಳು ನಮಗೆ ಕಥೆಗಳು ಜ್ಞಾನದ ಕಲಶಗಳು ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ನೆನಪಿಸುತ್ತವೆ—ಕಾಲ ಬದಲಾಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದರೂ, ಭಕ್ತಿ, ಕರುಣೆ ಮತ್ತು ಆಶ್ಚರ್ಯದ ಚಿತ್ರಣಗಳು ನಮ್ಮ ಶಾಶ್ವತ ಭಾಷೆಗಳಾಗಿಯೇ ಉಳಿಯುತ್ತವೆ.

ವೇದಾಂಗಗಳು: ವೇದಗಳ ಅಂಗಗಳು

ವೇದಾಂಗಗಳು ಎಂಬುದು “ವೇದಗಳ ಅಂಗಗಳು” ಎಂಬ ಅರ್ಥ ನೀಡುತ್ತವೆ. ವೇದಗಳನ್ನು ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ಸಂರಕ್ಷಿಸಲು, ಅರ್ಥೈಸಲು ಮತ್ತು ಹಂಚಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ರೂಪುಗೊಂಡ ಆರು ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಗಳ ಸಮೂಹವೇ ವೇದಾಂಗಗಳು. ನಮ್ಮ ದೇಹಕ್ಕೆ ಅಂಗಗಳು ಹೇಗೆ ಆಧಾರವಾಗಿವೆಯೊ, ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಈ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಗಳು ವೇದಗಳ ಶುದ್ಧತೆ ಮತ್ತು ರಚನೆಯನ್ನು ಕಾಪಾಡುವ ಅವಿಭಾಜ್ಯ ಸಾಧನಗಳಾಗಿವೆ. ವೇದಗಳ ಅಧ್ಯಯನಕ್ಕೆ ಅವು ಪ್ರಮುಖವಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಮಂತ್ರಗಳ ಪವಿತ್ರ ನಾದ ಮತ್ತು ಅರ್ಥಗಳು ತಲೆಮಾರುಗಳಿಂದ ತಲೆಮಾರಿಗೆ ಶ್ರದ್ಧೆಯಿಂದ ಉಳಿದುಕೊಳ್ಳುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದವು.

ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ

ಮಾನವ ಇತಿಹಾಸದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ಮತ್ತು ಶಾಶ್ವತ ಭಾಷೆಗಳಲ್ಲೊಂದಾದ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಕ್ಕೆ 3500 ವರ್ಷಗಳಿಗಿಂತಲೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಇತಿಹಾಸವಿದೆ. ದೇವವಾಣಿ —ಅಂದರೆ “ದೇವರ ಭಾಷೆ” ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯಲ್ಪಡುವ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತವು ಜಗತ್ತಿನ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ವೈಭವಶಾಲಿ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ಬೌದ್ಧಿಕ ಪರಂಪರೆಯ ಶಿಲಾಯಗವಾಗಿದೆ. ಪವಿತ್ರ ಗ್ರಂಥಗಳು, ಮಹಾಕಾವ್ಯಗಳು, ತಾತ್ವಿಕ ಚರ್ಚೆಗಳು, ವೈಜ್ಞಾನಿಕ ಕೃತಿಗಳು, ನಾಟಕಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಅಪರೂಪದ ಕಾವ್ಯಕೃತಿಗಳು—ಇವುಗಳ ಅಪಾರ ನಿಧಿಯನ್ನು ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತವು ತನ್ನಲ್ಲೇ ಸಂಗ್ರಹಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದೆ. ಪಂಡಿತರು ಮತ್ತು ಕಥೆಗಾರರ ಪರಿಶ್ರಮದಿಂದ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತದ ಪ್ರಭಾವವು ಕಾಲ ಮತ್ತು ಭೌಗೋಳಿಕತೆಯನ್ನು ಮೀರಿ ಇಂದಿಗೂ ಜೀವಂತವಾಗಿದೆ.

ಜೈನ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ

ಜೈನ ಧರ್ಮವು ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಆಳವಾದ ಬೇರುಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದೆ. ಇದು ಜೈನ ಪರಂಪರೆಯ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಹಳೆಯ ಹಾಗೂ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಕೇಂದ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದಾಗಿದೆ. ಕ್ರಿ.ಪೂ. 3ನೇ ಶತಮಾನದಲ್ಲೇ ಜೈನ ಧರ್ಮವು ಅರಳತೊಡಗಿತು ಎಂದು ನಂಬಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಭೀಕರತೆಯ ಕಾಲಘಟ್ಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಆಚಾರ್ಯ ಭದ್ರಬಾಹು ಮಹಾಪಂಡಿತರೊಬ್ಬರು ಜೈನ ಮುನಿಗಳನ್ನು ದಕ್ಷಿಣಕ್ಕೆ ಕರೆತಂದು, ಸನ್ಯಾಸಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದ ಮೌರ್ಯ ಸಾಮ್ರಾಟ ಚಂದ್ರಗುಪ್ತರನ್ನು ಜೊತೆಯಾಗಿ ಕರೆಸಿಕೊಂಡರು. ಅವರ ವಾಸಸ್ಥಳವಾದ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರೀಯ ಶ್ರವಣಬೆಳಗೊಳವು ನಿಧಾನವಾಗಿ ಜೈನ ಅಧ್ಯಯನ, ಧ್ಯಾನ ಮತ್ತು ಹಸ್ತಪ್ರತಿ ಸಂರಕ್ಷಣೆಯ ಮಹತ್ವದ ಕೇಂದ್ರವಾಗಿ ಅರಳಿತು.

ಕಾಲಕ್ರಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಅನೇಕ ರಾಜವಂಶಗಳು—ಕದಂಬರು, ಗಂಗರು, ಚಾಲುಕ್ಯರು, ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಕೂಟರು ಹಾಗೂ ಹೊಯ್ಸಳರು—ಜೈನ ಸಮುದಾಯಕ್ಕೆ ಅಪಾರ ಆಶ್ರಯ ನೀಡಿದರು. ಈ ಪೋಷಕ ವಾತಾವರಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಜೈನ ಬಸದಿಗಳು, ಮಠಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಲಿಪಿ–ಲಿಖಿತ ಕೇಂದ್ರಗಳು ಬೆಳೆದುಬಂದವು. ಇದರ ಪರಿಣಾಮವಾಗಿ ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯದ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಕ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಕೃತಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅನೇಕವು ಜೈನ ಕವಿಗಳಿಂದ ರಚಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟವು; ಹೀಗಾಗಿ ಜೈನ ಧರ್ಮವು ಈ ಪ್ರದೇಶದ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯದ ಬೆಳವಣಿಗೆಗೆ ಶಿಲಾಯುಗವಾಗಿ ಪರಿಣಮಿಸಿತು.

ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಸ್ಥಳೀಯ ಆಡಳಿತಗಾರರು

ತುಳುನಾಡು ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯಲ್ಪಡುವ ಕರಾವಳಿ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕವು ಚೈತನ್ಯಭರಿತ ಹಾಗೂ ವರ್ಣರಂಜಿತ ಇತಿಹಾಸವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದೆ. ಮುಕ್ತವಾದ ಸಮುದ್ರವ್ಯಾಪಾರ, ಸಮೃದ್ಧ ದೇವಾಲಯ, ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿ ಮತ್ತು ದೃಢವಾದ ಪ್ರಾದೇಶಿಕ ಗುರುತಿನೊಂದಿಗೆ, ಈ ಪ್ರದೇಶಕ್ಕೆ ಸಮೀಪವಿರುವ ಅರಬ್ಬಿ ಸಮುದ್ರದ ತಟದಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಣಿಜ್ಯ, ಕಲೆ ಮತ್ತು ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಜೀವನದ ಕೇಂದ್ರವಾಗಿ ಮಾರ್ಪಾಡಾಯಿತು. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಆಡಳಿತ ನಡೆಸಿದ ಶೂರ ನಾಯಕರು ತಮ್ಮ ಧೈರ್ಯ, ದೂರದೃಷ್ಟಿ ಮತ್ತು ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ಷಮತೆಯಿಂದ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಇತಿಹಾಸದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾಸಿಹೋಗದಂತಹ ಅಚ್ಚರಿಯನ್ನು ಮೂಡಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ಈ ಪ್ರದೇಶದ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಗೌರವಾನ್ವಿತ ನಾಯಕಿಯರಲ್ಲಿ ಒಬ್ಬರಾದ ಉಳ್ಳಾಳದ ರಾಣಿ ಅಬ್ಬಕ್ಕ, ಚೌಟರು—ಭಾರತದ ಮೊದಲ ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯ ಹೋರಾಟಗಾರ್ತಿಯರಲ್ಲಿ ಒಬ್ಬಳು. 16ನೇ ಶತಮಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಪೋರ್ಚುಗೀಸ್ ಆಕ್ರಮಣಗಳನ್ನು ಅದ್ಬುತ ತಂತ್ರಪ್ರಾವೀಣ್ಯತೆ ಮತ್ತು ಬಲಾಢ್ಯ ಶಕ್ತಿಯಿಂದ ಎದುರಿಸಿ, ತಮ್ಮ ತೀರರಾಜ್ಯವನ್ನು ಯಶಸ್ವಿಯಾಗಿ ರಕ್ಷಿಸಿದವರು. ಅವರ ಪರಂಪರೆ ಇಂದಿಗೂ ಧೈರ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯದ ಬಲವಾದ ಸಂಕೇತವಾಗಿದೆ.
