On the auspicious occasion of Ratha Yatra, we are proud to present a remarkable 184-year-old masterpiece: the Rath from Shri Gangadhareshwara Temple in Shrirangapatna, currently housed at the Manjusha Museum.
This exquisite circular chariot, which stands approximately 13.4 feet tall, features a significant inscription in its first compartment: ‘Sri Shubhamastu Swasti Sri Vijayabhudaya Shalivahana Shaka Varshagalu 1764ne Shubhakrutu Sam 11 San 1842.’ This particular year marks a special moment, as a new primary chariot has been prepared for Sri Gangadhareshwara Swamy, with the number 111 intricately carved as part of its design.
Uniquely adorned, the chariot boasts several sculptural scenes drawn from the Shaiva and Vaishnava Puranas. Notable sculptures include Devendra traveling on an elephant, Uma Maheshwara riding a bull, Vedavyasa and Shukamuni in deep meditation, as well as dancing Ganesh, Tripurantaka, and the Dashavtaras.
During the festival, the idol of the deity is placed on the Rath, and a grand procession takes place, allowing villagers to meet the god outside of the temple. The essence of Ratha Yatra lies in making the deity accessible to those who may be unable to visit temples, such as the elderly and children. This celebration is held during significant festivals and is marked by great enthusiasm and participation from the community.
